Coaching DuVal Athletics since 2000

When I was hired as a teacher in Fall 1999 I was blessed to have a classroom across the hall from the Softball Coach, Ms. Carol Konrad. I asked her if I could help out. I was a softball player in Prince George’s County in my High School years and wanted to try coaching. I was brought on board as a volunteer coach.

Long story short, I was assigned the Junior Varsity Softball coaching position in 2002. And we have had a JV program ever since.

In 2006 I was given the Head Varsity Softball Position and went with it. We had success as a team. In 2008 we were reclassified as a 4A school, so our competition changed. After a few bumpy years adjusting to fast pitch we found our way in 2010. In that season we cracked into the top 4 and found ourselves in the third round of the regional play-offs. With that came our first ever Gazette FIRST TEAM ALL-COUNTY honor for our shortstop and I received Gazette Coach of the Year Honors. I relished in the fact that I was able to be photographed by the Gazette standing right behind my shortstop, who was a sophomore at the time.

Since that magical year, we have had 2 more First Team All-County players (both at third base), and 6 second team selections.

In 2012 I was asked to join in on a new endevour. The county was beginning to add Special Olympics (Unified) sports into it’s program. I was asked by our Italian teacher to join her in starting a Unified Bocce team (an Italian sport). I agreed and our new Bocce team went on to win Bronze in the Maryland State Special Olympics Tournament. The next year, two separate DuVal Bocce teams placed Gold and Silver. The winning has continued.

In 2013 we added another Corollary Special Olympics Sport (Students with special needs playing with students from our regular education population) in Indoor Softball. This gives an awesome opportunity to merge our amazing CRI Special Education students to compete for their school in a new sport.

In 2015, Corollary Track and Field was added.

My coaching philosophy- student first, athlete second. I have prided myself on having teams that have had high GPA’s.
